De Guara - Alquezar
Alquezar is the center and largest town of the protected natural park Sierra de Guara. High above Alquezar thrones the Santa María, absolutely worth visiting. Both the castle and the village are located on a hilltop at the edge of the gorge of the Río Vero. The picturesque village has been declared a historic-artistic monument. Alquezar originates Moorish but in the year 1065 it was recaptured by the king Sancho Ramirez.
The old village brings us back to the Middle Ages with its narrow, steep streets. The houses are mostly from the 16th century and later. In that century the traditional architectural style characteristic to the Somontano area was introduced here as well. The houses blend into the landscape because they are made of stone and wood.
Alquezar is surrounded by canyons (gorges) and is the perfect place for canyoning. Of course there are many routes. For example, the gorge of the river Vero, or a walk to ancient rock paintings.
