San Juan de la Peña
Riding a horse, San Juan chased a deer through the forest. The forest suddenly ceased, and there was a ravine. With horse and all he fell down, but both came down unharmed. Right on that spot, he decided to found a monastery, where he spent the rest of his life.
Relive the old times as you walk through the ancient monastery. The new monastery exists hundreds of years as well, and is partly restored, partly covered by a glass floor, so that you can look into the ancient ruins. In these ruins every room is explained using plaster statues. You get a good idea of the monastic life in ancient times. The glass floor brings a lot of hilarity; few dare to stand on it.
San Juan de la Peña is a major stop on the Camino de Santiago. At the new monastery through a short walk you'll get to the balcony of the Pyrenees. Beautiful views!
On the way back, it may be an idea to visit the cathedral in Jaca. Here are some murals of churches housed in the region, and is very interesting to look at.
