Ainsa-Sobrarbe
Ainsa is declared a historic-artistic monument and is the capital of the Sobrarbe region. There is a modern area with shops and an old town that was built on the hill. The architecture of the medieval old town is the most unadulterated and therefore one of the most beautiful places in the Pyrenees of Aragon.
Ainsa has its origin in the year 724 when the king Garci Ximenes conquered it from the Moors.
The castle from the 11th century is part of the defense of the Christian areas and this was also the germ of the emergence of the city that was walled during the Middle Ages. The construction took several centuries to complete, it started in the 11th century and was completed in the 17th century.
The current appearance of the city is the result of Felipe II, who ordered to build a castle to strengthen key areas in the Pyrenees and prevent French raids.
Market
Every Tuesday there is a market down in Ainsa, besides local produce such as olives, cheese and oil the merchandise is mainly fruit, vegetables and clothes.
Restaurants
Upstairs in the old town you can extensively eat in various places for lunch or dinner. The inn 'La Mora Nuei' is a must, as is the tapas restaurant 'La Carasca', or the theatrical "Callizo". Want a bite to eat with the locals? Go down in Ainsa to eg Sanchez or Pirineos. There are probably more restaurants in Ainsa then you can try during one holiday!
Museums
In the old upper town you will find the Museum of art and traditional crafts and in the castle of Ainsa is next to the Geopark Visitor centre Pyrenees also the Eco-museum located.
