Observing birds of prey with a guide
The Spanish Pyrenees in general and Sobrarbe in particular is the ideal place in Europe to spot, observe and photograph birds of prey. There are a number of possibilities to do this under the guidance of an English speaking guide. Both at Ainsa, and higher in the mountains at Revilla.
Twice a week (on Monday and Thursday) the birds of prey are fed at a special feeding place just outside Ainsa. An impressive spectacle with hundreds of vultures, Red and Black Kites and Egyptian Vultures (Alimoches). And when they have their belly full, then there is the chance to see the rare and protected Bearded Vulture if it comes for the remaining bones.
The scent, the sounds, hundreds of imposing vultures above your head and in front of you with a span of 2.5 meters, the elegant red kites that, like true artists, get their share of meat ... In short, a spectacle you should not miss on your holiday in this area.
The tours start at the eco museum in the castle of Ainsa, and it is necessary to phone them in advance to sign up (English speaking staff).
You can also experience the feeding of the vultures in an even more intense way: from a special camouflaged hut within the vultures feeding area. This is the perfect opportunity for photographing birds of prey and hundreds of vultures. And if you have patience and luck, you can also photograph the bearded vulture from up close.
Another way to see the birds of prey is through a walk with a guide to an observation point. You have a very big chance here to see bearded vultures here as well. And will learn a lot about all birds of prey.
